U.S. heavy truck sales are collapsing:

Sales dropped by 20,000 units in August, hitting an annualized pace of 422,000, the lowest since Jan 2022.

The 3-month average has now fallen to 438,000, the weakest since the 2020 pandemic crash.

Since May 2023, sales are down 131,000 (-24%), marking four straight months of declines.

Economists are worried because trucking is a leading indicator of the economy. When freight and construction firms see growth ahead, they buy trucks. When they see trouble, they stop.

Orders confirm the weakness. Class 8 net orders fell 21% y/y in August to just 12,844 units, the 8th consecutive monthly decline.

Freight volumes are soft, borrowing costs are high, tariffs are biting, and regulatory uncertainty is freezing investment.

Truck sales are already under pressure, will Trump’s new 25% tariffs on heavy trucks make this even worse?
