The downward trend in the real estate, building materials, decoration, and stone industry has poured cold water on practitioners. In 2023, the output of panel products from large-scale enterprises in China was 820 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 8.6%. Among them, the output of marble panels was 260 million square meters, a year-on-year decrease of 18.4%, and the output of granite panels was 560 million square meters, a year-on-year decrease of 3.2%. The continuous decline in production is due to a significant contraction in market demand. Affected by the structural adjustment of the real estate market, the scale of commercial housing transactions has been shrinking. Although high-end construction projects in first- and second-tier cities still use high-quality stone materials, the total consumption of stone materials nationwide has significantly decreased, leaving many small and medium-sized stone enterprises without their main customer base. The stone industry, which once thrived on the booming real estate sector, is now facing a "lack of demand" dilemma as the downstream market cools, with sharp declines in orders becoming the norm.
The cooling of import and export trade has further worsened the situation for the stone industry. In 2024, China exported 7.81 million tons of stone (excluding crushed stone and stone powder under item 25174900), a year-on-year decrease of 0.2%, with an export value of $5.03 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 20.9%. In recent years, the complexity and severity of the international environment have escalated, global economic growth has slowed, and the procurement demand of foreign customers has significantly decreased. Coupled with factors such as tariff barriers and trade protectionism, the difficulty of exporting Chinese stone products has increased. Many stone enterprises that previously focused on foreign trade have seen their order volumes drop by more than half compared to previous years, and some have even had to abandon overseas markets and refocus on the domestic market. However, competition in the domestic market has already become fierce, further intensifying the survival pressure on the industry.
