Intel At A Double Upgrade: Turnaround Or Squeeze?

Intel jumped about 5% on Friday on top of a 9% move Thursday, after Bank of America did something rare: it skipped the hold rating entirely and went from underperform straight to buy. The stock is now up roughly 250% in 2026, which forces the obvious question of whether this is a real turnaround or a crowded short unwinding.

The bull case has actual substance now

This is not pure sentiment. The new Xeon 6+ parts on the 18A process landed at Computex, and there is real chatter about foundry orders from Google and Microsoft. If Intel can convert even a couple of marquee external customers, the foundry story stops being a money pit narrative and starts being an option on US chip manufacturing.

Why I stay a little skeptical

A 250% move invites momentum money, and momentum cuts both ways. Foundry economics take years to prove, and a double upgrade after the stock has already tripled is the kind of call that can mark short-term enthusiasm.

How I would play it

I would rather own a starter and add on confirmation that foundry orders are real and recurring, than chase a vertical move on an analyst headline. The story is finally interesting, but interesting is not the same as derisked.
