What Apple is really announcing at WWDC

Most people will judge WWDC on whether the demos look slick. The more useful lens is what Apple is admitting about its own product strategy.

Buy versus build

A Gemini-powered Siri is a striking decision. Apple, the company that prides itself on owning the whole stack, is effectively renting the model layer from a rival. That is not weakness, it is a product call: own the distribution and the experience, rent the commodity. For a PM it is a masterclass in picking your battles.

The agent is the real story

The rumoured App Store AI agent, delegating tasks like booking and editing, is the bigger bet. If it works, Apple turns 2 billion devices into an agent platform overnight. If it ships half-baked, it deepens the perception that Apple missed the moment. The keynote is one thing, the real test is what is actually live in iOS 27 versus what is a promise for next year.
