September has historically been the weakest month for retail, averaging a 4.9% drop over the past five years.

This year, however, retail is up 3.9% so far in September, bucking the seasonal trend.

August also showed unusual strength at +7.30%, compared with a flat five-year average.

By contrast, November remains the strongest month historically, with gains near 10% on average.

The setup suggests seasonality may be shifting, with consumers showing resilience heading into the holiday season.

If this trend holds, it could make 2025 one of the rare years where September isn’t a drag on retail.
