Around 2014, TSMC adopted a practice of producing advanced nodes that have long cycle time in a seasonally slow first quarter. This helps wafer get ready by the time demand picks up and improves utilization rate in slow quarters. Around this time Apple joined TSMC on 20nm and the relationship continued since then.
