
Hong Kong stocks open | Hang Seng Index rises 0.74%, gold stocks and tech stocks strengthen, SenseTime-W rises over 7%
On August 17th, Hong Kong stocks opened higher, with the Hang Seng Index rising by 0.74% and the Hang Seng TECH Index increasing by 1.14%. Driven by spot gold breaking through USD 4,400 per ounce, gold stocks collectively strengthened; tech stocks also rose, with SENSETIME-W gaining over 7% due to a profit warning indicating a turnaround to profitability in the first half of 2026. Overnight, U.S. stocks slightly declined, but the NASDAQ Golden Dragon China Index closed higher, boosting the opening performance of Hong Kong stocks
According to Zhitong Finance APP, on August 17, the Hang Seng Index opened up 0.74%, at 25,303.41 points; the Hang Seng Tech Index rose 1.14%, at 4,761.20 points; and the National Enterprises Index increased by 0.85%, at 8,411.87 points.
Gold stocks strengthened, with Zijin Mining International (02259) rising over 3%, Shandong Gold (01787), China Gold International (02099), Lingbao Gold (03330), and Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining (06693) increasing nearly 3%, while Zhaojin Mining Industry (01818) and Zijin Mining (02899) rose over 2%. Spot gold broke through $4,400 per ounce, driving up gold and non-ferrous metal stocks.
Tech stocks collectively rose, with SenseTime-W (00020) increasing over 7%, JD.com Group-SW (09618) rising over 3%, Lenovo Group (00992) up over 2%, Alibaba-W (09988) gaining nearly 2%, Tencent Holdings (00700) rising 1%, and Xiaomi Group-W (01810) and Baidu Group-SW (09888) both up 0.7%. SenseTime announced a profit warning last Friday, expecting to turn a profit in the first half of 2026, with profits during the period estimated at around 500 million to 700 million yuan, marking the company's first consolidated profit since its listing.
Among the constituent stocks of the Hang Seng Index, China Telecom (00728) and others saw significant declines.
Overnight, the three major U.S. stock indexes slightly declined, while the NASDAQ Golden Dragon China Index rose 0.61%, leading to a higher opening for Hong Kong stocks today
