SpaceX Completes Acquisition of AI Software Company Cursor in $600 Billion Deal

SpaceX has officially completed its acquisition of artificial intelligence programming startup Cursor for a staggering $600 billion, making it one of the largest M&A deals in the history of the tech industry, signaling a new phase in Elon Musk's competition with Anthropic and OpenAI in the AI sector.

According to regulatory filings, the acquisition officially took effect on August 14, just about two months after SpaceX announced the agreement. The deal aims to bolster the software capabilities of Musk's AI business, now renamed SpaceXAI, allowing it to enter the market for AI tools centered on programming—a segment regarded as one of the most valuable tracks for AI commercialization.

Following the acquisition, Cursor's co-founders will join the ranks of billionaires, and their team will also gain access to SpaceX's vast resources of advanced AI chips. In a blog post, Cursor stated, "We will be able to use the world's largest GPU cluster, which will provide us with the computing power to build more powerful models while lowering operational costs."

Cursor: From Rapid Growth to Integration into the SpaceX Ecosystem

Cursor's AI programming assistant was launched in 2023, designed to help programmers write and debug code more efficiently.

Driven by strong demand from software developers for "vibe coding" tools, Cursor rapidly became one of the fastest-growing startups and a core player in this technological wave.

This merger allows the Cursor team to access SpaceX's computing infrastructure, supporting the development of more competitive models. Before the deal was formally closed, SpaceX and Cursor jointly launched their first collaborative model, Grok 4.5, in July. This model focuses on programming, financial, and legal tasks, and according to both companies, its usage cost is lower than that of competing models. Subsequently, SpaceX released Grok Bot—a product capable of handling tasks around the clock like an AI agent team—as well as the upgraded Grok 4.6 model.

Musk Bets on Software: AI Revenue May Surpass Sum of All Other SpaceX Businesses

Although SpaceX has signed multiple multi-billion dollar agreements with companies such as Anthropic and Alphabet's Google to open up its computing resources to external enterprises, Musk clearly views software capabilities as a more critical strategic direction.

It is reported that during an internal meeting with SpaceX employees in August, Musk explicitly stated that the company "must succeed at the software level," emphasizing that artificial intelligence represents the company's present and future. He remarked at the meeting, "Our AI revenue will surpass the total revenue of all other SpaceX businesses in September."

SpaceXAI had previously seen relatively limited penetration in the enterprise market and underwent a series of layoffs and restructuring. The acquisition of Cursor is seen as a key move to turn the business around and accelerate commercial implementation, as well as an important step for Musk to catch up with OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI arms race.
