The mass production yield of Samsung Electronics' sixth-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM4) has approached 80%, achieving the annual target approximately four months ahead of schedule. This marks a rapid recovery in competitiveness for the South Korean chip giant in the high-end AI memory chip sector.

According to a report by The Seoul Economic Daily on August 9, Samsung Electronics' HBM4 yield has recently neared the 80% level. At the beginning of mass production in February this year, the product's yield was still below 60%, while the original year-end target was set at 80%—now achieved half a year early, surpassing industry expectations. In the semiconductor industry, an 80% yield is known as the "golden yield," indicating that the defect rate has been minimized, with stable output and profitability rising in tandem.

The breakthrough in yield has directly accelerated Samsung's supply pace. Samsung Electronics has decided to more than triple its HBM4 sales quarter-over-quarter in the third quarter and plans to increase the proportion of HBM4 in its overall HBM sales for the second half of the year to over 60%. Meanwhile, Samsung has set a longer-term goal: to raise its HBM market share to a level comparable to its DRAM market share (approximately 38%) by the end of the year. The expansion of HBM supply will also provide more sufficient memory chip guarantees for the production of NVIDIA's AI accelerator, "Vera Rubin."

Yield Surge: Completing a "Half-Year Leap" in Six Months

Samsung Electronics became the first globally to ship HBM4 in mass production this February. However, during the initial phase of mass production, yields below 60% constrained the expansion of supply scale.

According to industry insiders, as mass production scale continued to expand in the second half of the year, the speed of process improvement accelerated significantly, ultimately reaching the 80% yield target about four months ahead of schedule. This progress signifies a substantive breakthrough for Samsung in the production stability of HBM4.

In the semiconductor industry, an 80% yield is regarded as a key watershed. After crossing this threshold, unit production costs drop significantly, and profitability improves substantially, allowing companies to rapidly ramp up volume while maintaining quality.

Supply Acceleration: Q3 Sales Target Triples

With yields stabilized, Samsung immediately launched its supply expansion plan. The company explicitly stated that it would increase HBM4 sales in the third quarter to more than three times that of the previous quarter and set a target for HBM4 to account for over 60% of total HBM sales in the second half of the year.

Behind this goal lies the reality of persistent supply shortages in the HBM market. As investment in AI infrastructure accelerates, demand for high-performance memory chips from major customers, represented by NVIDIA, continues to climb. The increase in Samsung's HBM4 supply will directly support the production of NVIDIA's "Vera Rubin" AI accelerator.

Market Landscape: Samsung Accelerates Catch-Up, Diversification Needs Provide Window

In the HBM market, SK Hynix currently holds a dominant position. Samsung's recent yield breakthrough is seen as a significant opportunity to regain market share.

Reports indicate that Samsung has set its year-end HBM market share target to a level comparable to its DRAM market share (approximately 38%), demonstrating a clear intent to catch up.

Lee Jong-hwan, a professor in the Department of System Semiconductor Engineering at Sangmyung University, stated that for major customers like NVIDIA, sourcing from multiple suppliers is more advantageous than relying on a single source. He believes that Samsung can leverage the ramp-up of HBM4 to quickly expand its market influence.

The inherent demand from clients for supply chain diversification provides Samsung with a favorable window to enter the market. As HBM4 yields continue to stabilize and are expected to improve further, Samsung's competitive position in the high-end AI memory chip sector is likely to see substantive improvement.
