Amazon evaluates electric van options excluding Rivian, General Motors BrightDrop testing begins

Amazon has launched testing of Chevrolet's BrightDrop electric vans as part of its delivery fleet. The company is evaluating other electric van suppliers besides Rivian to achieve its goal of getting 100,000 electric vans on the road by 2030. Rivian has currently delivered only 30,000 vans, with production increases expected by 2026-2027. If General Motors wins the Amazon order, it will help develop its commercial electric vehicle business
According to Zhitong Finance APP, Amazon (AMZN.US) has initiated testing of Chevrolet BrightDrop electric vans as part of its delivery fleet. Following the news of the test, Rivian (RIVN.US) saw its stock price come under pressure. The e-commerce giant confirmed that as part of its plan to have 100,000 electric delivery vans on the road by 2030, the company is evaluating options from other suppliers in addition to the existing Rivian delivery vans, indicating that Amazon may seek to diversify its supply chain rather than rely solely on Rivian.
Looking back at the cooperation background, Amazon reached an agreement with Rivian in September 2019 to purchase 100,000 electric vans and committed to making a "significant" investment in the latter. However, to date, Rivian has only delivered 30,000 vans, and the CEO of Rivian expects production to significantly increase by 2026-2027.
To make up for the quantity gap, Amazon is testing products from several automakers, including General Motors (GM.US), Ford (F.US), Stellantis (STLA.US), and Mercedes-Benz (MBGYY.US).
For General Motors, winning Amazon's orders would provide a significant boost to its nascent commercial electric vehicle business. The company integrated the BrightDrop division into its GM Evolve division last year, which focuses on supplying vehicles for corporate and government fleet customers.
BrightDrop electric vans, with a range of 272 miles, have already been adopted by FedEx (FDX.US) and several public sector fleets, and this collaboration test with Amazon may further expand its market application scenarios
