Tesla's sales in some European markets have declined for eight consecutive months! Sweden's registration volume plummeted by 84% in August

Tesla's sales in the European market continue to be weak, having declined for eight consecutive months. In Sweden, registrations plummeted by 84% in August, from 1,348 vehicles to 210 vehicles. Despite an overall increase in electric vehicle sales in Europe, Tesla's sales in July fell by 40% year-on-year. Data from France, Denmark, and Sweden show that the revamped Model Y has failed to stop the decline in sales. Norway is an exception, where Tesla's registrations grew by 21.3%, but competitor BYD's registrations soared by 218% in Norway
According to Zhitong Finance APP, Tesla (TSLA.US) is struggling to cope with CEO Elon Musk's aggressive political stance in Europe, regulatory challenges regarding autonomous driving, and increasingly fierce competition in the electric vehicle market. The sales data released by the automaker in the European market continues to be weak, showing a downward trend for eight consecutive months in some European markets. Data released on Monday by Swedish automotive data agency Mobility Sweden shows that Tesla's car registrations in Sweden plummeted 84% year-on-year in August, dropping from 1,348 vehicles in the same period last year to 210 vehicles.
So far this year, Tesla's performance in the entire European market has been lackluster. Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) shows that although overall electric vehicle sales in Europe are on the rise, Tesla's sales in Europe in July still fell 40% year-on-year, totaling only 8,837 vehicles, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline. Currently, Tesla's sales in some European markets in August are also weak, continuing the downward trend into the eighth month.
France, Denmark, and Sweden are among the first European countries to release August monthly data, and their car registration data shows that the updated Model Y from Tesla has had little effect in stopping the decline in sales.
Data released on Monday from France shows that the number of new Tesla car registrations in August decreased by 47.3% compared to the same period in 2024, while the overall car market in France grew by nearly 2.2% during the same period.
In Sweden, Tesla's car registrations fell by more than 84% (Sweden's electric vehicle sales remained flat, while the overall car market grew by 6%); in Denmark, this figure dropped by 42%.
Norway is an exception, where Tesla has a strong foundation, and nearly all new car sales are electric vehicles. In August, the American electric vehicle manufacturer saw a 21.3% increase in registrations in Norway. However, its Chinese competitor BYD saw a staggering 218% increase in registrations in Norway.
Tesla's largest markets in Europe are Germany and the UK, both of which have also seen declines in sales this year, but August sales data has not yet been released.
In Tesla's August sales in Sweden, the Model Y accounted for the highest proportion, with 141 registrations; followed by the Model 3, which had 67 registrations. This performance is far behind other automakers: Volvo had 2,718 registrations in August, an increase of 8% year-on-year; Volkswagen had 2,614 registrations, up 19.3% year-on-year; and Toyota (TM.US) had 2,245 registrations, with a year-on-year increase of 35%.
Tesla's sales data in Europe for July lagged behind its Chinese electric vehicle competitor BYD, which was included in the monthly sales data for the European market for the first time. Statistics for electric vehicles in the European market show that under the European monthly statistical scope for July (including EU + UK + EFTA), BYD's market share in Europe was 1.2%, surpassing Tesla's approximately 0.8%, thus leading Tesla in market share for that month.
Despite significant improvements to the iconic global model Model Y, Tesla's new car registrations in several key European markets still saw a sharp decline in July
