The global landscape of AI consumer applications is stabilizing, but competition among the leading players is becoming increasingly fierce.
The latest released global Top 100 generative AI consumer applications list shows that ChatGPT continues to hold the top position, but Google has significantly narrowed the gap through a multi-product matrix strategy, with its general assistant Gemini capturing about 12% of ChatGPT's web traffic, ranking second.
Chinese AI products are performing strongly in the global market, with Alibaba's Quark AI assistant rising to 9th place on the web, and ByteDance's Doubao ranking 12th. The list indicates that among the 50 web applications, 3 products primarily serving Chinese users made it into the top 20, while another 7 Chinese-developed products mainly target overseas markets.
For the first time, Google occupies four positions on the list with independent domain names, showcasing the effectiveness of its AI product matrix layout. In addition to Gemini, the developer-focused AI Studio has entered the top 10 for the first time, academic research tool NotebookLM ranks 13th, and the AI experimental platform Google Labs is at 39th.
The competition in the mobile sector is even more intense, with Gemini's monthly active users approaching half of ChatGPT's. The Grok assistant on the X platform has performed impressively, rapidly accumulating over 20 million monthly active users from a zero start at the end of 2024, ranking 23rd in the mobile sector. Chinese-developed mobile applications occupy nearly half of the list, with an estimated 22 out of 50 mobile applications developed by Chinese teams.
Google's Multi-Product Matrix Independently Ranks for the First Time
Through a domain separation strategy, Google has for the first time allowed its AI products to be independently tracked and ranked. Gemini ranks second on the web, achieving about 12% of ChatGPT's traffic, and its monthly active users on mobile are approaching half of ChatGPT's, demonstrating strong growth momentum.
AI Studio, as a sandbox platform for developers, has successfully entered the top 10, supporting users in building Gemini multimodal model applications. NotebookLM, after separating from Google Labs, ranks 13th, and this academic research tool has steadily grown over the past year, with only a slight decline during the summer academic user loss period.
Google Labs ranks 39th, hosting multiple AI experimental projects, including the video model Veo 3 and the clothing try-on application Doppl. Data shows that after the release of Veo 3, Google Labs' traffic surged over 13%, marking the largest single-month increase in the past year.
The Globalization of Chinese AI Products Significantly Improves
Among the products primarily serving Chinese users, Alibaba Quark ranks 9th, ByteDance's Doubao ranks 12th, and the Dark Side of the Moon Kimi ranks 17th, with over 75% of their traffic coming from China.
More noteworthy is the globalization trend of products developed in China. According to statistics, seven AI products developed in China primarily serve overseas markets, including video generation models like DeepSeek, Hai Luo, and Ke Ling, as well as the SeaArt image generation tool.
The advantages of Chinese products in the mobile sector are even more pronounced, with an estimated 22 out of 50 mobile applications developed by Chinese teams, but only 3 primarily serving the Chinese market. Meitu contributed 5 applications, and ByteDance launched 4 products, showcasing strong mobile AI product development capabilities.
Competition Among General Assistants Intensifies
Although ChatGPT maintains its leading position, competitors are rapidly closing the gap. Grok on the X platform performs particularly well on mobile, starting from zero in late 2024, and currently has over 20 million monthly active users. After the release of the new model Grok 4 in July, mobile usage surged nearly 40%, and the launch of the anime character Ani further boosted user growth.
Meta's AI assistant has seen relatively moderate growth, with Meta AI ranking only 46th on the web and failing to enter the top 50 on mobile. After its launch at the end of May, growth was slow, and incidents in June where some conversation content appeared in public information streams further affected user confidence.
DeepSeek experienced a significant drop after a peak in February, with web traffic declining over 40% from its peak and mobile usage down 22%. In contrast, Perplexity has maintained strong growth across platforms, while Claude continues to grow on the web but has seen a slowdown in mobile growth.
"Ambient Programming" Becomes a New Growth Point
AI-assisted programming tools are emerging as a new growth area. Following the March list where only Bolt was featured, both Lovable and Replit successfully entered the main list, with Lovable jumping to 22nd place, indicating the rapid rise of AI application generation.
User retention data shows that this trend is not a fleeting phenomenon. Consumer Edge's credit card panel data indicates that a leading "ambient programming" platform's user base in the U.S. has an income retention rate exceeding 100% within months of registration, indicating that users are not only retained but are also expanding their usage scale These platforms have also driven the growth of related infrastructure products. The traffic growth of the database service provider Supabase has almost synchronized with the core ambient programming platform, with a significant acceleration in growth over the past nine months compared to previous years. Websites built and launched through Replit and Lovable have contributed considerable traffic to their respective platforms, demonstrating the platform ecosystem effect
