Just now! Zuckerberg wrote a letter: hinting at abandoning the open-source route and joining the ranks of close AI, aiming to build personal superintelligence in the next 10 years

In the letter, Mark Zuckerberg hinted that Meta will abandon the open-source route and focus on developing personal superintelligence. He believes that superintelligence will accelerate human progress and empower individuals with greater autonomy. While AI may bring material abundance, more importantly, everyone should have access to a personal superintelligence that helps them achieve their goals and improve their lives. Meta's vision is to make this power accessible to everyone
Just now, Mark Zuckerberg sent a letter indicating the intention to create superintelligence and empower it to individuals, which means personal superintelligence. However, there is an important message in this letter, although it is mentioned in passing; the implication is that they are going to abandon the open-source route. The original wording is to cautiously choose open-source content. It seems that Meta is also going to join the ranks of ClOSE AI. Just last year, Zuckerberg was still talking extensively about open-source AI, and in just one year, the tone has completely changed.
Personal Superintelligence
In the past few months, we have begun to see signs of AI systems self-improving. Currently, this improvement is still very slow, but it is undoubtedly happening. The development of superintelligence is within reach.
It is clear that in the coming years, AI will improve all our existing systems and allow us to create and discover new things that are currently hard to imagine. However, where we will direct superintelligence remains an open question.
In a sense, this will be a new era for humanity; but on the other hand, it is merely a continuation of historical trends. Just two hundred years ago, 90% of people were farmers, living off the land. Technological advancements have continuously liberated humanity from survival pressures, allowing us to invest more energy into pursuits of our own choosing. With each step, people have used the added productivity to achieve what was once impossible, pushing the frontiers of science and health, while also spending more time on creation, culture, relationships, and enjoyment of life.
I am very optimistic that superintelligence will help humanity accelerate the pace of progress. But perhaps more importantly, superintelligence has the potential to usher in a new era of personal empowerment—people will have greater autonomy and agency to improve the world in the direction they choose.
Although the material wealth that AI may bring in the future could be profound, the more meaningful impact on our lives is likely to come from everyone having a "personal superintelligence": it can help you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, experience any adventure, become a better friend in the eyes of those you care about, and grow into the person you aspire to be.
Meta's vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone. We believe that this power should be placed in people's own hands, allowing them to guide it towards the values they cherish.
This differs from some views in the industry: they advocate for centralizing superintelligence to automate all valuable work, allowing humans to survive on the "relief" provided by its output. At Meta, we believe that it is the pursuit of individual ideals that continually expands prosperity, science, health, and culture. In the future, this will only become more important.
The intersection of technology and people's lifestyles is Meta's core focus; and it will only become more important in the future.
If the trend continues, you can expect people to spend less time on traditional productivity software and more time on creation and connection. A personal superintelligence that deeply understands us, clarifies our goals, and helps us achieve them will be far more useful than anything else. Personal devices, such as glasses that can "see what you see, hear what you hear," and interact with us throughout the day, understanding context, will become our primary computing devices We believe that the benefits of superintelligence should be shared as widely as possible with the world. Of course, superintelligence will also bring new security concerns. We need to adopt a rigorous approach to mitigate these risks and be cautious about the content we choose to open source. Even so, we still believe that to build a free society, we need to empower as many people as possible.
The remaining time in this decade is likely to be a critical period that will determine the direction of this technology: will superintelligence become a tool for personal empowerment, or will it become a force dedicated to the large-scale replacement of jobs in society?
Meta firmly advocates for creating personal superintelligence that can empower everyone. We have the resources and expertise to build the vast infrastructure needed, as well as the ability and willingness to bring new technologies to billions of people through our products. I am pleased to focus Meta's efforts on building such a future.
