NVIDIA's Perplexity AI challenges Google Chrome in partnership with mobile giants to pre-install AI browsers

NVIDIA-invested Perplexity AI is challenging Google's search dominance through its browser and plans to collaborate with mobile manufacturers to pre-install its AI browser Comet. This browser allows users to query personal data and perform tasks using natural language. Despite the challenge of switching the default browser from Chrome to Comet, Perplexity believes that once user stickiness is established, it will lead to tens of millions to hundreds of millions of user growth. As industry competition intensifies, OpenAI is also developing an AI browser with autonomous decision-making capabilities
According to the Zhitong Finance APP, Perplexity AI, invested by NVIDIA (NVDA.US), is challenging Google's (GOOGL.US) search dominance through a browser breakthrough. The company's CEO, Aravind Srinivasan, revealed on Friday that they are in talks with global smartphone manufacturers to pre-install their testing Comet browser on smartphones, attempting to change user habits through device default settings.
This AI-integrated browser is currently only open for desktop testing, allowing users to directly query personal data (such as emails, calendars, or browsing history) using natural language, and even perform tasks like scheduling meetings and summarizing web pages. Srinivasan admitted, "Convincing manufacturers to change the default browser from Chrome to Comet is extremely difficult," but emphasized that once user stickiness is established on mobile platforms, it could lead to potential user growth in the tens of millions to hundreds of millions.
Industry data shows that Google Chrome currently holds about 70% of the mobile browser market, while Apple's Safari and Samsung Browser combined hold 24%. Perplexity's breakout strategy reflects the intensifying competition in AI agent technology—OpenAI is also developing an AI browser with autonomous decision-making capabilities that can automatically handle complex tasks like travel bookings and financial management.
This startup, which completed $500 million in financing this year and is valued at $14 billion, has investors including Accel, NVIDIA, Jeff Bezos, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Bloomberg reported in June that Perplexity has been in negotiations with Samsung and is exploring the possibility of collaborating with Apple to embed AI search functions into device assistants (such as Siri or Bixby).
In the AI-driven browser war, Perplexity aims to carve out a new entry point that differentiates itself from traditional search by deeply integrating generative AI with user data. This transformation is not only about browser market share but also points to the struggle for defining the next generation of human-computer interaction
