After the release of Grok 4, another major announcement: Musk stated that the Grok chatbot will land on Tesla cars by next week at the latest

After the Grok 4 launch event, Elon Musk announced that the Grok chatbot will land on Tesla cars no later than next week. This news has reassured investors amid a decline in Tesla's sales. Musk also mentioned that Tesla is expanding its Robotaxi service and is awaiting regulatory approval to launch in the Bay Area. Grok 4 performed excellently in benchmark tests, and Tesla's stock price opened up more than 1% after the announcement
Just after the live broadcast of the launch event for the new generation artificial intelligence (AI) model Grok 4, Elon Musk added a significant piece of news that was "missed" during the event.
After the Grok 4 launch event live stream ended, a post on the social media platform X under his company mentioned that there was no discussion about whether Grok would "ride along" with Tesla vehicles. Musk replied, "Grok will soon be integrated into Tesla cars, no later than next week."
In response to a post asking for updates on the Robotaxi business, Musk stated that Tesla is expanding the Robotaxi service area in Austin and replied to someone asking when it would be implemented in the Bay Area, saying they are waiting for regulatory approval to launch Robotaxi services in the Bay Area, which could happen in one to two months.
Musk's reply confirmed that Grok will soon be integrated into Tesla vehicles. Amid a double-digit decline in Tesla's sales, this response will undoubtedly reassure some investors, as they had previously called for closer ties between Tesla and xAI. Musk's business empire is accelerating its integration, and the resources from xAI integrated with Musk's companies are expected to enhance the research and development efficiency of technologies like AI, from which Tesla can benefit.
Just hours after Musk's announcement, xAI released the new version of its large model Grok 4. During the online live broadcast of the Grok 4 launch event, Musk personally endorsed it, stating that Grok is "the world's strongest AI," and said, "Grok 4 has reached graduate-level proficiency in all disciplines, even surpassing most PhDs."
The xAI live stream claimed that Grok 4 scored higher than competitors' models like OpenAI in benchmark tests and promoted the improved voice conversation capabilities of Grok, stating that the voice model's response speed has doubled in the past eight weeks, with latency reduced by half, and user engagement on the X platform is also "taking off."
On the day of the Grok 4 launch and Musk's confirmation of Grok's integration into Tesla vehicles, on Thursday, July 10, Eastern Time, Tesla's stock price opened up over 1%, quickly expanding to more than 4%, reaching nearly 4.1% at one point, before narrowing to within 3%, still offsetting the decline from Wednesday and refreshing the closing high for the week.
Tesla and xAI Cooperation Continues to Deepen
The integration of Tesla and xAI reflects the increasingly close business relationship between the two companies. Last July, Musk initiated a vote on the X platform, asking whether Tesla should invest $5 billion in xAI. 68% of participating voters expressed support, and Musk subsequently stated that he would discuss the idea with Tesla's board.
xAI later merged with the X platform, with Musk stating that the deal valued the AI startup at $80 billion and the social network company at $33 billion.
According to information disclosed by Tesla in April, xAI became one of the company's revenue sources last year, generating $198.3 million in expenses due to business, consulting, and support agreements with Tesla, of which $191 million was used to purchase Tesla's utility-scale energy storage battery, Megapack.
Technical Integration and Vehicle Compatibility
A hacker known as "green" discovered information in Tesla's firmware last week indicating that drivers would be able to choose from various "Grok" personalities, including argumentative, conspiracy theorist, and children's story styles. These findings suggest that the Grok feature may only be available for newer vehicles equipped with Hardware 3.
Musk had previously hinted that Grok would serve as an AI assistant for Tesla vehicles, allowing drivers to communicate with their cars and request Grok to perform specific tasks. The chatbot will also become the voice and brain system for Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus.
Timing-Sensitive Business Expansion
The timing of Grok's integration into Tesla vehicles is quite sensitive. The release of Grok 4 coincides with the chatbot facing controversy for posting inappropriate content. Recently, the chatbot sparked controversy for making anti-Semitic remarks and other inappropriate content on the X platform, leading xAI to temporarily take Grok offline to address the issues.
In a statement released online by the Grok team, they stated: "Since becoming aware of the related content, xAI has taken action to prohibit hate speech before Grok posts on the X platform."
Meanwhile, Tesla is facing challenges of slowing sales and increasing competition. As of the close of trading this Wednesday, the company's stock price has plummeted 38% from its peak in December after last year's U.S. elections. Investors are concerned that Musk's public disputes with former President Trump on social media may impact Tesla's business prospects.
