Google Cloud appoints new CFO: Oracle finance executive joins, aiming at the AI cloud market

Google Cloud appoints new CFO Kobi Bar Nathan, who previously worked at Oracle, a move that may intensify industry competition. After years of losses, Google Cloud's recent operating profit exceeded expectations and is pouring resources into the AI cloud market. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian also comes from Oracle. Despite lagging behind Amazon and Microsoft in market share, Google Cloud is rapidly rising. Oracle is also expanding its influence in the AI field by establishing a joint venture with OpenAI
According to reports, Google (GOOGL.US) has recently poached a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for its cloud business from Oracle (ORCL.US), a move that may further intensify competition in the industry.
According to LinkedIn, Kobi Bar Nathan officially took over as Google Cloud CFO this month. Previously, he held a similar position at Oracle and earlier worked at Microsoft (MSFT.US) in charge of cloud computing finance.
In the fiercely competitive market of internet computing power leasing, Google and Oracle are rapidly emerging as challengers. According to a report by Synergy Research Group, the market shares of the two companies rank third and fifth, significantly trailing behind Amazon (AMZN.US) and Microsoft.
Notably, the current CEO of Google Cloud, Thomas Kurian, also comes from Oracle. He joined Google in 2019 due to differences with Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison over cloud computing strategy.
In recent years, Google Cloud has become a highlight of the company, with the department exceeding analysts' expectations for operating profit for several consecutive quarters after years of losses. Although its market share lags behind Amazon and Microsoft, Google has recently invested resources into this business, especially given its core position in the company's overall artificial intelligence (AI) strategy.
Coincidentally, Oracle has also been expanding its influence by focusing on AI clients. Earlier this year, Oracle announced the establishment of a joint venture named "StarGate" with OpenAI, which will provide massive computing power support.
Google has not yet issued a statement regarding Bar Nathan's appointment as Google Cloud CFO but confirmed that the executive has been on board for the past two weeks. Oracle has not responded to requests for comment
