Asus CEO: AI PCs will still take 1-2 years to realize

ASUS CEO Hu Shubin stated that the AI PC industry faces challenges from tariffs and a lagging technological ecosystem, and it is expected to take another 1-2 years to fulfill market commitments. Although manufacturers like ASUS and Lenovo have launched AI PCs, they have failed to boost the sluggish laptop market. The new U.S. government's tariff policy has lowered market expectations, and Hu Shubin mentioned that the estimated market growth rate for the PC industry has dropped to 1% or 2%. He pointed out that consumer spending is affected by the global economy and tariffs, while existing software is still immature and has not attracted users
Under the dual pressure of tariff shocks and the lagging AI technology ecosystem, the AI PC (Artificial Intelligence Computer) industry is still facing challenges.
According to a report by Bloomberg, ASUS CEO Samson Hu admitted in an interview that AI PCs will take another one to two years to fulfill their promises, and the next generation of AI PCs may not drive market development until 2026 or later.
Although major manufacturers including ASUS and Lenovo Group launched AI PCs one after another last year, this has not boosted the sluggish notebook market. To make matters worse, a series of tariff policies recently announced by the new U.S. government have further lowered market expectations for this year.
Hu stated that ASUS may consider raising prices in the U.S. by as much as 10% to offset tariff costs. He bluntly said, "The initial estimate for the PC industry's market growth rate was about 5%, but due to the uncertainty of tariff policies, most estimates have now dropped to 1% or 2%, or even flat." This pessimistic forecast reflects the entire tech industry's concerns about escalating trade frictions.
The CEO, who leads one of the world's top five PC manufacturers, revealed that consumer spending on computers is constrained by global economic concerns and tariff impacts, while AI has failed to attract users as expected due to the immaturity of existing software.
Hu mentioned that although hardware supporting AI tasks has already been launched, including Microsoft's Copilot+ PC introduced at Computex 2024 a year ago, the industry may still need one to two years until third-party application developers build software that can fully utilize these features.
