Apple plans to achieve "Made in India" for the US version of the iPhone by 2026

According to informed sources, Apple plans to transfer all iPhone production for the U.S. market to India as early as 2026. Indian media reports that the tech giant has been continuously strengthening its production base in India over the past few years, with a new Foxconn factory in Bangalore expected to begin operations later this month. However, against the backdrop of escalating U.S.-China trade tensions, Apple seems to be accelerating this process. Although the Trump administration has not imposed tariffs on smartphones, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that the current exemptions are only temporary policies. Apple currently assembles phones in India through contract manufacturers such as Tata Electronics and Foxconn, but the core components of its flagship products still heavily rely on the Chinese supply chain. Data shows that Foxconn's Indian factory produced 12 million iPhones in 2024, with plans to increase capacity to 25-30 million units this year. Apple's global iPhone shipments are expected to be around 225.9 million units in 2024, a slight decrease of 1% from the previous year, with the U.S. market accounting for 28%, or about 63.25 million units. This means that to achieve its goal, Apple needs to nearly double its production capacity in India next year
